Biography:
After completing his BA from the
University of Liverpool in 1994 David worked for a number of years as a social
worker and then, as a charity fundraiser. These positions gave David invaluable
insight into the variety and vulnerability of the human experience.
David returned to education in 2005
to take up a place on a Masters programme in Philosophy and Religion at
Heythrop College, the specialist philosophy and theology college of the
University of London. David completed his Masters with a thesis on Gillian Rose’s
reading of Kierkegaard’s pseudonymous authorship.
David moved to the west of Ireland
from London a year ago to begin research on a PhD in the philosophy department
at NUIG. David is enjoying the way of life in Galway, particularly the Guinness
and the rain…
Current Research:
Between Immanence and Transcendence:
On the Religious Significance of the Hegelian Middle
The overall aim of David’s research
is to re-assert the centrality of the religious dimension to Hegel’s thought
through a retrieval of his paradoxical, speculative logic, which refuses a
strict separation between the infinite and the finite or the natural and
supernatural. The work seeks to explore how simultaneous Identity and
non-identity opens up a middle space where the divine is both sought and
gratuitously received as gift.
