Prof. S. Gerard Jennings BSc, MSc, PhD, DSc, Ph.D.(h.c. Gote'g), C.Phys., F.Inst.P., F.Roy. Met. Soc.

Prof. Jennings is the Director of the Air Quality Technology Centre. He graduated from the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI, Galway) in 1965 in Experimental Physics with a B.Sc (1st. Class honours), followed by a M.Sc. degree (1967) and obtained a Ph.D. degree in Atmospheric Physics from the University of Manchester, England, in 1971. In 1980, he was appointed Statutory Lecturer in the Department of Experimental Physics, NUI, Galway. His main research interest is in Atmospheric Science which includes the fields of atmospheric aerosol and cloud physics, climate change and environmental change, atmospheric pollution and air quality, and electromagnetic radiation propagation in cloud and aerosol media. Prof Jennings has been instrumental, in collaboration with Departmental colleagues, in establishing and operating the Atmospheric Research Station at Mace Head, near Carna, Co. Galway and is in charge of an active Atmospheric Research Group in the Department. More information can be found here.

Dr. Tom O’Connor MS.c., Ph.D., FInstP, MIES, MIOSH, LFOM ROH

Dr. Tom O’Connor is the Associate Director of the Air Quality Technology Centre and a retired lecturer in Physics and Occupational Hygiene. He has been involved in lecturing and research on various aspects of occupational hygiene and occupational health and safety at work over many years. He is a former president of the Occupational Hygiene Society of Ireland.

Dr. Marie Coggins BSc, MSc, PhD, LFOH

Dr. Marie Coggins works as a researcher with the Air Quality Technology Centre. She graduated from Sligo Institute of Technology with a BSc in Environmental Science and Technology (1995), obtained an M.Sc. from the Department of Biology and Biochemistry, Queens University Belfast (1996) and holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Physics NUI Galway (2000). She was awarded a certificate of operational competence in occupational hygiene (LFOH) from the British Occupational Hygiene Society. She has worked as an occupational hygienist for Eli Lilly S.A. Pharmaceutical and is currently lecturing Occupational Hygiene and Chemical safety at NUI Galway. Marie is currently Treasurer of the Occupational Hygiene Society of Ireland, a former steering group member of the Irish Occupational Hygiene Pharmaceutical Forum and an affiliate member of IOSH. Research interests include measurement of environmental and occupational hazards. She is currently working with many industries on occupational health and safety related projects and on the development of chemical control and containment designs. Dr. Miriam A. Byrne B.Sc, M.Sc., Ph.D., C.Phys., M.Inst.P.

Dr. Miriam Byrne is a Senior Researcher in the Air Quality Technology Centre. She graduated from University College Dublin in Experimental Physics (1988) followed by a M.Sc. from the University of Ireland, Galway and from Imperial College with a Ph.D in Aerosol Science and Technology (1995). She spent nine years working at Imperial College as a research scientist on various aerosol exposure projects. She began at the National University of Ireland, Galway, as a Junior Lecturer in Physics in 1999 and was promoted to College Lecturer in the summer of 2003. Dr. Byrne is a member of the Aerosol Society of the UK and Ireland and her research interests include environmental and occupational exposure to airborne pollutants, aerosol deposition on indoor surfaces and dermal contamination pathways.
