Syllabus
Part A: General Introduction - Heat and Momentum Transfer in the Environment
4 lectures
- Introduction -description of the course structure
- Overview of properties and constituents of the atmosphere
- Molecular transfer processes -diffusion and convection
- Introductory Physics: Static and Dynamic Fluids
- Measurement of fundamental quantities -relative humidity, temperature, pressure, fluid (gas and liquid flow)
- Introductory Physics: - Conduction, Convection, Radiation
Part B: Global and Local Atmospheric Pollution
20 lectures
- Sources and sinks of gaseous and particulate pollutants
- Physical characteristics of gaseous and particulate pollutants -focussing on particles
- Effects of air pollution- including health effects and climatic effects
- Air quality measurement
- Air pollution control - air quality standards
- Atmospheric boundary layers-wind: causes and variability: atmospheric stability, turbulence, boundary layers, roughness and terrain effects.
- Atmospheric dispersion models-K theory, box models, Gaussian models, effective height of point sources, dispersion from continuous sources, urban dispersion. Line, puff, area sources.
- Experimental techniques: wind tunnel analysis applied to (a) buildings and wakes and (b) complex terrain
- Computer packages- Introduction to software such as SCREEN and ISCTS
- Indoor air pollution -sources and sinks, pollutant characteristics, pollutant transport, health effects, soiling effects, general indoor air pollution control, specialist control (clean rooms)
- Introductory Physics: Acoustics and Noise
- Sources of noise and its effects
- Noise measurement
