3rd Year Course syllabus (24 lectures 10 3 hour practicals)
Assessment :
30% continuous assessment, 30% practical examination, 40% written examination
Introduction to the C programming language: Simple arithmetic in C, variable types, loops, print statements, file input
and output, functions, random numbers.
Solving problems numerically: Numerical integration, root finding, solution of ordinary differential equations by the Euler method, Runge-Kutta solutions. Numerical errors and stability of algorithms. Monte Carlo techniques
Example physical systems:
Newton's cooling law, simple pendulum, damped and driven pendulum. Logistic equation and chaos. Radioactive decay. Random walk and percolation problems, fractals. Cellular automata.
