Andrea Mahon –PhD Student (Discipline of Podiatric Medicine)

 Andrea Mahon is the first graduate to be enrolled on a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme within the Discipline of Podiatric Medicine at NUI Galway. She began her PhD in October 2015 after securing funding from the Irish Research Council. Throughout her Bachelors and Masters degrees, she developed her research interests in the area of diabetic foot complications.

Andrea’s PhD aims to assess the efficacy of mobile health technology in populations at risk of developing diabetic foot ulceration. She is Lead Researcher of this multi-centre project in collaboration with the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. Andrea is also working to secure funding for the first international collaboration with the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) in Canada.

In addition to her primary PhD study, Andrea also acts as Research Supervisor for final year undergraduate students and as a reviewer for a number of journals. She has published original research and has delivered lectures at conferences worldwide.

In March 2016, Andrea was awarded an International Journal of Wound Care (JWC) Award for the Best Pre-Clinical/ Laboratory Study. The title and professional qualification of Chartered Scientist (CSci) was officially awarded to her in November 2016 by the International Science Council on the merit of her previous and current research endeavours.
