Taught Programmes

For all Arts Taught Programmes the following supporting documentation must be submitted:

  • Official qualifications and exam results (transcripts) to date: required for all non-University of Galway applicants and for University of Galway graduates who did not receive their undergraduate degrees from University of Galway. Applicants who have still to graduate must upload final transcripts on receipt. 
  • English language competency: if necessary, evidence of  English language competency.
  • Personal statement: all applicants must enclose a typed personal statement of approximately 600 words explaining why you wish to undertake the programme(s) of your choice, outlining how it fits into your career objectives, unless indicated otherwise in the table below. 
  • Passport or Birth certificate:—a copy of your passport or birth certificate must also be submitted.
  • IMPORTANT: Some programmes require additional documentation. Please check below for the list of programmes that require additional supporting documents.

Master of Science (Adolescent Health)

  • Current CV
  • Two written references are required (one academic and one professional)

Master of Arts (Ateangaireacht Chomhdhála / Conference interpreting)

Applicants to this programme may not have to submit evidence of English language competency: rather their language ability will be ascertained by the programme director during a telephone/ Skype/face-to-face interview.

Master of Arts / PgDip (Child, Youth and Community)

Two written references are required.  One should be an academic reference (in the case of applicants currently undertaking studies) OR an employer (in the case of applicants currently in employment).

Master of Science (Clinical Neuroscience)

  • Two written academic references

Master of Science (Coastal Marine Environment: Physical Processes, Policy and Practice)

Master of Science (Consumer Psychology)

Master of Arts (Creative Arts, Producing & Curation)

  • A professional/artistic CV is also required for this course.
  • Two reference names are required from mentors, educators or employers. 
  • For 'supporting documentation', a portfolio can be added to the 'Other Documents' item in your online application.

Master of Arts (Digital Art Design and Cultures)

Applicants to this programme must include:

  • a current C.V.
  • a sample of your creative arts practice and/or relevant academic work
  • names of two people (mentors, educators, or employers) who can provide references.

Master of Arts (Drama & Theatre Studies)

  • Applicants to this programme must submit a writing sample of 5 - 6 typed pages. This may consist of an academic essay, creative writing, or theatre reviews.
  • A Personal Statement outlining suitability for and interest in the programme is required.
  • Names and contact details of two referees should be uploaded also.

Master of (Education)

  •  A personal statement consisting of no more than 500 words, discussing your motivation(s) for wishing to pursue the programme.
  • Two references (one academic and one professional) 

Master of Education (Special and Inclusive Education)

Applicants to this programme are required to submit a current CV.

Master of Arts (English) 

Applicants are also required to submit:

  • A writing sample consisting of a (preferably recent) academic essay they have produced (1000 - 3000 words). In exceptional cases, this requirement may be waived, or an alternative type of writing sample may be accepted, at the discretion of the Course Board.
  • Personal statement (c. 500 words outlining your relevant motivations, experience and interests (academic and other) that makes you feel that you would be suited to a place on this programme.
  • 2 written references are also required. 

Master of Arts (Environment, Society and Development)

Applicants to this programme are required to submit a current CV and also a personal statement outlining interest/motivation for participating in this programme and why you feel you are a suitable participant for the programme. For Guidelines for Personal Statement please refer to this document.

2 references written are also required.

Master of Arts (Film Production & Direction)

Applicants to this programme must include:

  • A sample of film-making (a link to Vimeo/Youtube or online portfolio, accompanied with a precise description of your role in the production).
  • One idea (script or storyboard) for a short film.
  • One short critique (200–400 words) of a recent film or television programme.
  • An indication of your preference in working in production, direction, camera, sound and editing roles.
  • A personal statement, indicating why you’d like to do the course and why you think you’d be suited to the course.

Master of Arts (Film Studies - Theory & Practice)

Applicants are required to submit a writing sample consisting of either a graded academic essay or a review essay of a recent film (1000 words).

Master of Arts (Gender, Globalisation and Rights)

Applicants must submit an academic writing sample such as class or seminar essay.

Master of Arts (Global Media and Communication)

Applicants must submit a sample of writing or other media. A CV is also required for this course.

Master of Arts / Pg Dip (Health Promotion)

Applicants to this programme are required to submit a current C.V. Please also submit a personal statement of approximately 500 words outlining:

  • your interest/motivation for participating in this programme
  • how you feel you meet the specific selection criteria outlined for this programme
  • why you feel you are a suitable participant for the programme

Master of Science (Health Psychology)

There is no need to submit a personal statement for this programme.

Please note that International applicants are required to submit module descriptors, module weightings and a copy of their final year research project.

Master of Arts (History)

Please submit a personal statement of about 500 words explaining your motivation for further studies in History and why you are interested in this programme.

Two academic references submitted on the downloadable standard referee form should also be submitted.

Master of Arts (Irish Studies - Literature and History)

Applicants to this programme are required to submit a writing sample of at least 1,500 words.

Two academic references submitted on the downloadable standard referee form should also be submitted. 

Master of Arts (Irish Theatre History and Archives)

Applicants to this programme must submit a writing sample of 5 - 6 typed pages. This may consist of an academic essay, creative writing, or theatre reviews.

Two letters of reference are required from mentors, educators or employers.

A Personal Statement outlining suitability for and interest in the programme is required.

Master of Arts (Journalism)

  • A copy of your current CV.
  • A personal statement of no more than 500 words detailing your interest in the programme and your career aspirations.
  • And at least one sample of your work; for example, a blog post, student media, short radio or television or other media.
  • References: Applicants are required to supply the names of two referees.

Master of Arts (Landscape, Archaeology and Heritage)

Two hardcopy references are required for this programme, at least one of which to be an academic reference.

Master of Arts (Literature and Publishing)

Two hardcopy academic references are required (or relevant professional recommendations in the case of applicants who are a long time out of the education system).

Master of Arts (Medieval and Antiquity)

Applicants should also provide both a sample of their written work (such as an extended essay, seminar paper, or senior thesis; 2,000-5,000 words) and an academic reference. Their personal statement should explain their choice of Medieval Studies.

Master of Arts (Nua-Ghaeilge)

Master of Arts (Playwriting & Dramaturgy)

Applicants to this programme must submit a playwriting or other writing sample of 5 - 6 typed pages.

A Personal Statement outlining suitability for and interest in the programme is required.

Names and contact details of two referees should be uploaded also.

Master of Arts (Politics & Sociology)

Two references submitted on the downloadable Referee Form should also be submitted.

Master of Arts (Public Advocacy and Activism)

You are required to supply two written references.

Master of Arts / PgDip (Public Policy)

  • Personal statement: all applicants must enclose a typed personal statement of approximately 600 words explaining why you wish to undertake the programme of your choice, outlining how it fits into your career objectives, and discussing your research interests.
  • Referees: you are required to supply two written references. One must be an academic reference (in the case of applicants currently undertaking studies) OR an employer (in the case of applicants currently in employment).

Higher Diploma in Arts (Psychology)

There is no need to submit a personal statement for this programme.

Higher Diploma in Arts (Psychology - Conversion)

There is no need to submit a personal statement for this programme.

Master of Arts (Social Work)

Applicants must provide information on work experience (voluntary or paid) on the following form: Work Experience Details.‌

Two references are required:

  • An academic reference completed on the downloadable Referee Guidelines form.
  • A work-related reference also (i.e,. general reference from employer).

Personal statement consisting of 600 words on why you wish to study social work is also required.

Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Practice Teaching, Supervision & Management)

CORU registration number/details are required as well as a personal statement.

Master of Arts (Sports Journalism and Communication)

Previous samples of journalism - blog posts, writing, student media or broadcast is required as well as a CV and 2 references.

Master of Arts (Theatre and Production)

Applicants to this programme must submit a writing sample of 4 - 5 typed pages. This may consist of an academic essay, theatre reviews, excerpt from play, director's notebook, etc.

A Personal Statement outlining prior experience and reasons for applying is required.

Names and contact details of two referees should be uploaded also.

Master of Arts (Value and Knowledge)

A writing sample of at least 2000 words (for example, course essay) is required.

2 written references are also required - one of these must be an academic reference (in the case of applicants currently undertaking studies) OR an employer (in the case of applicants currently in employment).

Master of Arts (Writing)

Further to providing typical supporting documentation, applicants are required to submit:

- A representative writing sample (max. 5000 words). This can be in any genre or mix of genres. While an academic essay written for a university course is not ideal, if this is the only sample you can provide it will be given full consideration as part of your application.

- A personal statement (max. 600 words). This should specify your area(s) of interest and outline your intent and hopes for development while on the MA in Writing programme.

For all  College of Business, Public Policy and Law Taught Programmes the following supporting documentation must be submitted: 

  • Official qualifications and exam results (transcripts) to date: required for all non-University of Galway applicants and for University of Galway graduates who did not receive their undergraduate degrees from University of Galway. Applicants who have still to graduate must upload final transcripts on receipt.
  • English language competency: if necessary, evidence of English language competency.

Applicants to this programme do not need to submit a personal statement. Instead, please download and fill in this form and upload onto your application.

Master of Science in International Accounting and Analytics

Pathway A - September intake:  transcripts showing all modules taken as part of your degree and grades achieved. Where the applicant is a current final year undergraduate, show details of all modules registered for in final year.
 
Pathway B - January intake (only):  a notarised* copy of full associate membership of a recognised Professional Accounting Body.  
 

*Notarised copy means having the membership cert attested to by a notary (signature on the document).

 

Master of Economic Science (International Finance)

 Personal statement required for candidates whose primary degree is not in Economics.  
 

Master of Science (Information Systems Management)

Personal Statements are required to be original and unique, maximum 1 A4 page (600 words) Please do not exceed the word limit on your personal statement.

Master of Science (Marketing Practice)

You must provide a two page Curriculum Vitae.

Bachelor of Law (LLB)

 Please include a personal statement indicating why you wish to undertake this course and outline how it fits into your career objectives. Please attach any other additional documentation which you think may assist in the assessment of your application.
 

LLM Master of Laws (International Human Rights)

 Please include a personal statement which will provide any additional information to support your application (e.g., knowledge of languages, computing, special aptitudes, or details not already cited). Please attach any other additional documentation which you feel would enhance your application, e.g., curriculum vitae. One letter of reference is also a requirement for all applicants, except University of Galway graduates/students.
 
To qualify for entry into the LLM programmes at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, a candidate whose first language is not English must take either the IELTS or TOEFL test (click here for scores required).
 

LLM Master of Laws (Peace Operations, Humanitarian Law and Conflict)

 Please include a personal statement which will provide any additional information to support your application (e.g., knowledge of languages, computing, special aptitudes, or details not already cited). Please attach any other additional documentation which you feel would enhance your application, e.g., curriculum vitae. One letter of reference is also a requirement for all non-University of Galway applicants.

  • This Site Declaration Form‌ must be downloaded and completed on behalf of the Health Service Provider by the Director of Nursing/Midwifery/ Public Health Nursing or relevant nurse or midwife manager. 

    In completing please ensure that it includes the following:
  1. Clearly printed names and signatures of your Professional and Clinical Mentors that have agreed to support your application and will be in position for the duration of your programme.
  2. Your current role.
  3. Your highest level of education.
  4. Clearly stated if HSE or Non-HSE staff member.
  5. Signed statement by director or manager the length of time that you are in your current role and that you will remain in this role for the duration of the course.
  6. Sign off of funding.
  7. If candidate is ANP.

Master of Health Sciences in Nursing Education

Please submit:

  • A copy of current registration with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
  • Letter indicating that teaching practice has been negotiated in a Department of Nursing/ Midwifery Education.
