The MA (Culture and Colonialism) is a multi-disciplinary taught Master of Arts programme, designed for graduates from the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. It was established to
further an understanding of the meaning of ’colonialism’, ’imperialism’, ’post-colonialism’, and ’neo-colonialism’ across a range of disciplines. We encourage students to view colonialism in
the widest possible contexts, in both historical and contemporary forms. Our teaching staff over the years has been drawn from the departments of English, History, Political Science and Sociology, Economics, Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Classics, and is supplemented by Irish and international guest lecturers. Students take six courses spread over two semesters, and complete their degree with the writing of a 15,000 word dissertation.
Duration of the programme is one year beginning in September and ending in mid-August.
The MA (Culture and Colonialism) sets out to broaden and extend the analysis of colonialism and its effects by means of a multi-disciplinary approach and the writing of a minor dissertation. It teaches a variety of research and analytical skills, and encourages independent reading and research.
