The programme is designed for students with an interest in German language, literature and culture. In Semester 1, it introduces students to methods and techniques of interpretation and to selected theories of literature and culture. In Semester 2 the programme provides an overview of modern German literature in its cultural contexts. The literature modules are accompanied by a year-long language course which will raise the students' language skills to postgraduate level. The dissertation topic is chosen in consultation with the Department and supervised by a staff member on a one-to-one basis in Semester 2.
The programme aims to familiarise students with some of the gripping movements, authors, texts and themes of one of the most multi-faceted literatures of modern Europe. It encourages students to broaden their intellectual horizons while providing them with the necessary skills in research methods and critical analysis, so that they learn how to deal confidently with research tasks. In the process they become articulate members of society capable of contributing to professional and economic activities in a wide number of areas.
