MA (Translation Studies)

Programme description

A postgraduate course in Translation Studies, combining practical translation from two languages (French, Spanish, Italian, German) into English and an examination of Translation Theory. For students presenting with only one of Spanish, French and Italian, they should contact the respective Department in the first instance. Tuition consists of seminars in translation theory and practical classes throughout the year. Seminars deal with Translation Theory, Translation and Technology, and Skills of Consecutive Interpreting.

Programme aims and objectives

As there is a genuine need for professional translators, these postgraduate programmes in Translation Studies will be an important qualification for graduates with a two-language degree. These programmes are offered jointly by the Departments of Spanish, Italian, German, and French. It provides an opportunity for graduates with language-centred degrees to add specific professional skills to their primary qualification. An important aspect of the programme will be the exploitation of new language technology, utilising the multimedia facilities available on campus.

Minimum entry requirements

A BA (Honours) Degree. Successful applicants will normally be holders of a language-centred BA or its equivalent, or a primary degree or equivalent to the level of Second Class Honours. In addition, students must have studied two languages to degree level. Special consideration may be given to applicants who are native or near-native speakers of one of the four continental languages offered. Applicants whose native language is not English will be required to demonstrate a high level of competence in spoken and written English.

Selection criteria

An interview may form part of the selection process. Candidates are usually expected to have resided (for one year or equivalent prior to taking the final BA examination) in a country where the languages they study are spoken. Comparable and relevant practical and/or professional experience may be taken into account, particularly in the case of mature applicants.

Examination arrangements

Translation Studies I is examined at the end of semester 1. Language proficiency is assessed throughout the year and examined in a written examination at the end of the second semester. MA students present a dissertation at the end of Semester 2.
