Industry has diverse and exacting expectations of universities. NUI Galway is meeting these expectations by creating multi-level partnerships with national and international industries and businesses.
These partnerships can include one or more of the following relationships:
- commissioned research
- joint research
- consultation on programme design
- staff exchanges
- graduate or undergraduate placement in industry
- graduate employment
- a growing network of influential alumni
- company incubation.
The University has forged strong research linkages with industrial organisations, research institutes, and universities globally.
In designing new postgraduate programmes, and upgrading existing ones, the University has kept a close eye on the needs of the employment market. It regularly consults with industry on the relevance of its programmes of study.
Many programmes offered by the University, at both undergraduate and graduate level, include a period of work placement under the University’s
Professional Experience Programme (PEP) and
Graduate Experience Programme (GEP). This gives students valuable practical experience in their chosen career areas and helps build valuable long-term networks between industry and the University.
The University established a
Business Innovation Centre in 1984, the first such centre on an Irish university campus. Since then, AIB and Enterprise Ireland have funded additional accommodation for potential entrepreneurs. With support and guidance from the University, nearly 50 companies have grown in this incubation centre, many of which have been driven by NUI Galway alumni.
In addition, the Technology Transfer Office at NUI Galway is involved in the identification and protection of intellectual property through patent filings and in subsequent technology commercialisation, in technology licensing to industry, in technology spin-out into campus-based or start-up companies
