Investigation of Piezoelectric Based Power Harvesting Systems for Integration in the Road
Dr. Maeve Duffy, Migle Makelyte
The aim of this project was to analyse different types of piezoelectric materials in order to identify the best choice of such materials in energy harvesting from the movement of traffic on a road with integrated piezoelectric elements. Piezoelectric materials give high electrical output voltage per applied force, while having the necessary mechanical properties to withstand repetitive actuation forces applied by the weight of moving vehicles. Theoretical models for the piezoelectric energy harvesting system were developed and evaluated for two different types of piezoelectric materials, along with predictions of the payback time for different piezoelectric generator system configurations.
