Arts Millennium Building
President Fottrell with Dr. Michael Woods, T.D., Minister for Education and Science At a cost of £7.8 million, the Arts Millennium Building, which incorporates the Regional Centre for Modern Languages and provides extensive facilities for Arts Postgraduate Studies, is a fitting tribute to the drive and dynamism of Professor Nollaig Mac Congáil in his Deanship of the Faculty over the past six years, and marks an appropriate beginning to the term of the Dean elect, Professor John Marshall, who takes over the stewardship of the Faculty from June 16 next.
Special guests, Michael and Patrick Freyer, generous donors to the new building. The brothers are descendants of Sir Peter Freyer, who graduated in Medicine from Queen's College Galway in 1874 and later pioneered the prostatectomy operation at the Institute of Urology, St. Peter's Hospital, London. |TOP| Starting the season on a high note The Rowing Club is starting off the current season with an impressive string of victories. The mens intermediate squad have notched up numerous successes, including the Mens Novice Four Championship of Ireland win and third place in the Mens Intermediate Four Championship of Ireland, in July 1999 in Cork. The crew has been unbeaten in fours since September in the various Head of the River races and most recently captured the Mens Intermediate Eights title, at the prestigious Tribesmen Head of the River, in Galway, in March. The crew is already training hard for the Henley Royal Regatta (outside London), in early July. They also have set their sights on the Mens Intermediate Eights, Fours and Pairs titles, at this year's Irish National Rowing Championships, in July in Cork.

The annual Sports Awards Banquet, held in March in the Ardilaun Hotel, is one of the highlights of the students' social calendar. Having trained hard and competed in the many tournaments, championships and intervarsities throughout the year, the awards banquet is an occasion for celebrating success and receiving the plaudits of ones peers! This year, Guest of Honour was Joe McDonagh, Uachtarán Chumann Lúth Chleas Gael, who earned his sporting spurs in NUI, Galway and still proves his fitness by continuing to play for his native Co. Galway hurling club. An impressive range of sports was represented at the awards ceremony, which included four team awards and twelve individual awards. Éadaoin Ní Challaráin was not present to collect her Special Achievement Award, as she is currently in Sydney training for the September Olympics. We wish her well 'down under' and look forward to her return to Galway with an Olympic medal! |TOP| | April Cover Stories | April Features | Current Issue | Back Issues | Ollscéala is published by the Press and Information Office Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh.
