Galway's Latest Landmark
Unveiled
The bronze sculpture, Equality Emerging, by John Behan,
which was recently presented to Galway City by the SIPTU/NUI, Galway
Alliance, is located opposite the Cathedral. The sculpture celebrates
what has been achieved to date in the struggle for equality. The
SIPTU/NUI, Galway Alliance designs and delivers accredited training
programmes through 'e-learning' and open distance courses.

Sports Scholarships Encourage
Talent and Commitment

NUI, Galway Sports Scholarship winners with the President,

The Sports Scholarships scheme, now in its fifth year,
is hugely successful in its aim of supporting student athletes of
outstanding calibre and enabling them realise their full potential.
An added dimension to this year's presentation event was a special
appearance by the Sam Maguire Cup and members of the All-Ireland
winning team, a number of whom are NUI, Galway graduates and former
sports scholarship holders.

Mairéad Ní Chualláin was presented
with a Sports Scholarship for Athletics. She is the first NUI, Galway
student with a disability to receive a sports scholarship. Also

Tae Kwon Do Club
Celebrates National Success

Members of the NUI, Galway Tae Kwon Do
club took part in the Irish National Championships in November and
returned with a major share of the prizes. The competition, which
took place in the Neptune Stadium, Cork was the first of its kind,
with all clubs in Ireland invited to participate. NUI, Galway won
first prizes in all categories, including heavyweight divisions
and junior, senior and black belt divisions.

Hockey team wins
Intervarsity Plate
NUI, Galways hockey team recently
travelled to Dublin to take part in the Intervarsity Hockey competition
and returned as Plate winners after defeating Queens Belfast
2-1 in the Plate final. The competition held over three days in
November saw teams from nine Irish Universities compete against
each other for the prizes.
New Rugby Development
Officer Appointed
Following the article in the last issue
of Ollscéala, the CBIRFU has, jointly with the University
Club, appointed a University Rugby Development Officer. He is Colm
Lynch from the Rugby heartland of Limerick and may be contacted
