New Spatial Information Unit at NUI, Galway

The Spatial Information Unit at NUI Galway is a new research unit funded jointly by the NASC (West Ireland European Liaison) partners, NUI, Galway, Údarás na Gaeltachta and six local authorities. The function of the Unit, based in the Department of Geography, is to provide a specialized geographic information service to NASC Partners, researching the application of spatial analysis and modelling in the context of local and regional planning. Computer-based Geographical Information Systems (GIS) provide a means to manage and analyse data related to the spatial distribution of social, economic and environmental conditions of a region. GIS also enables geographic modelling and prediction of changing conditions, which can provide invaluable information for regional planning and development. For example, the impact of a proposed road scheme can be examined in terms of the effect on the catchment area for specific public and commercial services. The types of spatial analysis will vary with user demands but are likely to include identification and characterization of the functional areas and hinterland around urban settlements and aera projections of future demands for housing, waste, retail, industrial and social services. The Spatial Information Unit will develop models and techniques, which can be used as a Spatial Decision Support System for local and regional planning.
