An Tánaiste Opens
I.T. Building
The Information Technology Building, the latest addition to the
University's stock of new facilities, was opened in September by
An Tánaiste and Minister for Industry, Trade and Employment,
Mary Harney, T.D. The four-storey building, which cost £9.5m
incorporates state-of-the-art teaching and laboratory facilities.
The entire third floor is dedicated to research activity and is
fitted with £2.2m of research equipment.
Opening the facility, An Tánaiste said: "Investment
in skills and the promotion of close links between third level institutions
and industry is central to Ireland's strategy to weather the current
downturn in the IT industry.
She said that the experience of Galway shows clearly
the effectiveness of this approach. Following the closure
of Digital it was the availability of skilled people and the willingness
of the education sector to work closely with business that led to
the regeneration of the high tech sector in Galway and the creation
of the vibrant city that we see today. This investment will ensure
that this positive development is sustained into the future,
she said.

Staff Party Guarantees Sunshine!
TIn an otherwise dull and cloudy summer, the sun shone brightly
on the annual Staff Party. Almost 1,000 staff enjoyed a great afternoon,
which included good food, refreshments, lively music and a tremendous
atmosphere. Great credit goes to the hardworking organising committee
of Professor Ruth Curtis, Ann Duggan, Anne-Marie Forde and John
Sweeney
