NUI Galway, International Summer School, Irish Language

National University of Ireland, Galway offers Irish Language courses at beginners and intermediate levels each Summer. These courses are located at the University's Irish Language Centre (Árus Mháirtín Uí Chadhain), Carraroe (An Cheathrú Rua) in the heart of Connemara (approx 1 hour from Galway City). Quite apart from being a region of great beauty, Connemara is a major Gaeltacht (Irish speaking district) and is endowed with a rich folk tradition. The village of An Cheathrú Rua, therefore, provides the ideal location for learning Irish in its natural environment.

SU201 Beginners Course

This four week intensive course provides a basic knowledge of spoken Irish and a general introduction to Irish linguistic culture. It is designed for those who have no previous knowledge of Irish. (6 Semester Credits)

SU202 Elementary Course

The University is also offering a course for those who have some knowledge of the spoken language.  Its aim is to help participants expess themselves at an improved level of grammer and vocabulary. (6 Semester Credits)

SU301 Intermediate Course

The University is also offering a course for those who have a general knowledge of the language structures and a good vocabulary.  Its aim is to help participants become fluent and communicate more effectively in the spoken dialect of Conamara Irish. (6 Semester Credits)

SU302 Ardchúrsa

Tá an Ollscoil ag tairiscint cúrsa dóibh siúd a bhfuil ardchaighdeán Gaeilge acu.  Beidh na rannpháirtithe in ann labhairt go líofa agus beidh tuiscint acu ar struchtúir agus rialacha uile na teanga. (6 Chreidmheas Seimeastair)

Each course will include:

• Intensive instruction in spoken Irish each day.
• Special classes in traditional Irish singing and dancing.
• Introductory lectures on relevant topics including Irish History, Literature, Folklore and Society.

Cultural Activities

Excursions and visits will be arranged to several Irish speaking locations to experience language and culture in their natural environment. Towns and villages which will be visited include Carna and Rossaveal, Rosmuc and Spiddal with its local specialised crafts. The course will include receptions and evenings of traditional Irish entertainment for students.

Credits

Each course will merit six semester-hour credits for students who have successfully completed Freshman Year or further studies at University.

Accommodation

Accommodation will be provided in modern private houses with friendly Irish speaking families; for students who have some knowledge of Irish it will be possible to stay in a house in which only Irish is spoke. (Applicants wishing to avail of this facility should complete a special form after enrolment). All participants are required to stay in approved accommodation.

DóNALL ó BRAONáIN, M.A.

Dónall Ó Braonáin read Irish and Latin for his undergraduate degree at University College Dublin. Following an MA in Irish, he lectured in the Department of Modern Irish in UCD for several years and worked on academic publishing projects in the Royal Irish Academy ( Dictionary of Irish Biography, Foclóir na Nua-Ghaeilge). He has worked in RTÉ, Ireland’s Public Service Broadcaster, as a journalist, producer and senior editor and was Deputy Head of Raidió na Gaeltachta prior to his appointment as Príomhfheidhmeannach of Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge. His academic interests include narrative & language studies. He lives in An Cheathrú Rua, in Co. Galway.
