The Foundation Diploma in Skills for Life and Employment provides you with the opportunity to develop a portfolio of core skills that are seen as important for personal and professional development. Strong core skills are seen as contributing to quality of life factors for both low-skilled and high-skilled individuals. Core skills include:

• ·Self-management skills – an individual’s ability to manage self within uncertainty and change;
•  Communication skills – an individual’s ability to interact effectively through verbal and written communication skills and through use of information technology skills
•  Management of people and tasks skills – an individual’s ability to co-ordinate, plan, organise and control resources; 
•  Entrepreneurship and innovation skills – an individual’s ability to mobilise creativity and innovation in response to societal and economic changes. 

The aim of the Foundation Diploma is to provide you with the opportunity to develop a personal portfolio of core life and employment skills.  Development of the portfolio will allow you to identify your personal and professional skills, identify the strengths of your skills and plan a path to further develop your skills.

Learning Outcomes

When you have successfully completed the programme you will be able to:

•  Identify the skills of successful personal development and self-management and use these skills to monitor your own  performance;
•  Identify key communication skills and use these skills develop effective communication techniques and practices;
• Identify people and task management skills and develop your competence in these areas;
• Describe the concept of entrepreneurship and its key principles; develop your competence in these areas
•  Develop a personal portfolio of core skills and use this portfolio to enhance personal and professional prospects.

Assessment focuses on the development of a personal portfolio of skills

How long is the course and how often does it run?

This part time course runs frequently throughout the year, and involves:

Attendance at two 2-day workshops (with an interval of approx 3 weeks between the two workshops)

Where is the course held?

The course is held at various locations throughout the country. Typical locations include Galway, Maynooth and Cork.

How much is the course?

The course fee is €950.00 including your course material. A discount of up to 50% is available for those currently on the live register for the unemployed (see scholarship form below). A deposit of €100.00 is required with your application form.

What Qualification will I get?

You will be awarded the Foundation Diploma in Skills & Employment. This course offers 10 credits (ECTS) at NFQ Level 7.

Can I progress to further study in the Open Learning Centre?

Students who have successfully completed the Skills & Employment course can apply for the Certificate in Training and Education. They may receive an exemption from the Skills & Employment module and may receive a fee reduction.

When and where is the next course being held?

The next course will be run in April 2012. Exact dates and locations will be confirmed nearer the time.
