In September and January each year, orientation programmes are organised by the International Student Officer to provide
practical information and advice for new students on living in Galway, and to introduce the students to academic and
administrative staff of the University and to Student Services personnel. The sessions include information on procedures
which must be completed by incoming Visiting Students, services and facilities of the University as well as other general
information. Registration procedures will also be explained and representatives from the various Colleges will be present to
offer advice.
The dates of the orientation programme are set out at 4.1 above. Campus and Library tours are conducted on day one,
followed by Orientation on day two. Academic Advisory Sessions are held on day 3, with a historical tour of Galway city on day four.
The programme is designed to help the student settle into university life and the new environment as quickly and easily as
possible. Included in the programme is a guided tour of the campus, and of Galway city. In addition, the Colleges and Schools in which Visiting Students take the majority of their courses provide introductory talks which cover academic matters of relevance to Visiting Students.

Where the student shares with the owner and has limited access to the kitchen. Note that in this type of accommodation, a student may only have visitors at the discretion of the householder. Also note that you must come to an arrangement with the householder vis-a-vis cooking arrangements. Duvets are normally supplied but you must purchase your own sheets and duvet covers. These can be purchased at a reasonable rate in Galway at local department stores.
Houses/Flats/Apartments are normally rented for the full academic year (September to June approximately). In rented houses/flats/apartments, rent must always be paid during Christmas and Easter vacations. Occasionally, houses/apartments are rented for one semester but only if a back-up group for Semester II is guaranteed. It should be borne in mind that the demand for rented houses/apartments far exceeds the supply. Please check our website for details of private rented accommodation.
One room in which a student sleeps, cooks, etc. We discourage students from living in bedsits, as they are seldom custom-built and sometimes represent poor value for money. Experience also shows that students opting for this type of accommodation may experience loneliness.
To access accommodation from the private sector please visit our website at www.nuigalway.ie/accommodation Click on find-a-home service.
Please always remember that if you leave before the end of your tenancy agreement, whether written or verbal, you may be liable for the rent to the end date.
Always ask for a rent book.

The James Hardiman Library
James Hardiman, after whom the Library is named, was the first Librarian and a noted Galway historian. It is the main
University Library for staff and students and is centrally located on campus. It opened in 1973, replacing the original 1849
building in the Quadrangle. The Medical Library is located off-campus in the Clinical Sciences Institute.
Library Collections
The Library contains approximately 430,000 printed books, but the total library stock, including bound periodicals is almost 650,000 volumes. We offer online access to approximately 28,000 electronic journal titles in full text, and about 350,000 electronic books. Visiting students will feel very much at home with the range of international databases available via the Library's eKnowledge portal accessible through the Library's website, and if you don't find the item you need - the library actively encourages users to request material for purchase or material can be borrowed from other libraries on your behalf.
Special Collections
These include the Douglas Hyde manuscripts, Galway's municipal records dating from 1484, the Delargy collection, the Franciscan Library and a varied collection of documents and papers of local interest. The Library is rich in Irish language material and has a strong Irish Studies collection. Library archival collections are unique on theatre in Galway, including Druid, Taibhdhearc, the Galway Arts Festival and MACNAS, and broader Irish theatre history is represented through the O'Malley/Lyric theatre archive and the Shields Archive. The Library also holds the literary archive of the renowned Irish writer John McGahern. In addition, there are some excellent photographic archives.
Finding your way around the Library
The main customer service point is at ground floor level. Here you can get information and help on any aspect of Library Services. For your added convenience in borrowing and returning books, a number of self-service machines are located in the Library Foyer. For users with Disabilities and Special Needs there is a dedicated area with a range of relevant software and three sound-proofed reading areas for users with visual / aural impairments. Each floor in the library houses collections for different subject areas. On the ground floor you will find the Law Library, the Nursing Library and Special Collections and Archives; on Floor 1, the collections of interest to those studying Arts and Social Sciences; and on Floor 2, Engineering and Science collections and material to support pre-clinical medicine.
The Library isn't only about serious study - there is a quiet area on the ground floor with a collection of modern fiction, popular journals and newspapers, and located here as well is the Mind, Body and Soul collection. Registering to use the Library - your student ID card is your library card, so you can start using the Library immediately you are registered with the University. Introductory tours are available by arrangement at any time - but are regularly offered each evening without prior arrangement.
Opening Hours
During semesters, opening hours are very generous and include all day Saturday and Sunday. Extended late night opening also operates throughout the summer and on Saturdays - all fully detailed on the Library website at
http://www.library.nuigalway.ie/.
Internet Access / Electronic Resources
There are a number of PC clusters in the library with full Internet access - these are located on each floor and wireless access is available throughout to facilitate laptop use. Electronic resources are also fully accessible from home.
Learning about the Library
Information on all library services and resources can be found on the Library's website. The Library also publishes a newsletter (print and online). There is a Librarian designated with responsibility for visiting students, who will be happy to arrange orientation tours and introduce you to services - she can be contacted on extension 3564.

Computer Services provides the University’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure, ICT support
services to students and academic staff, and strategic co-ordination of University Information Services provision. Computer
Services provides desktop provision and support services to approximately 2,000 academic staff members. In addition, PC Suites across the campus provide free of charge Internet and email facilities to registered students. Printing is charged on a per-page basis. At registration students receive a registration statement that contains their username (student ID number) and password required to login to computers on the campus network. The registration statement also contains the student’s email address, which will end with

nuigalway.ie’ It is advisable to have the email address of your own Study Abroad Coordinator. Using your NUI Galway email will give you a very quick and inexpensive way of making contact with your own University once you are in Galway, particularly with regard to advice/clarification on course selection and approval.
Support Services are available to all staff and students. Computer Services operates a User Support Centre (USC) from 9:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday in Room 118, Computer Services, Arts and Science Building (Ground Floor). The USC is a one-stopshop where users can bring their computing queries and problems. Contact the USC via e-mail

The Counselling Service is based at No. 5 Distillery Road. The direct line telephone number is (091) 492484. There is an answer phone at that number outside office hours. There is, however, no emergency service so any messages left will not be responded to until the office re-opens the following morning or after the weekend.
The student counsellors provide a professional and strictly confidential counselling service for all students experiencing problems, while pursuing their studies.
A Student Health Service is provided on campus, 9.00 to 17.00 hrs, Monday to Friday, which is free and completely confidential.
It is staffed by two doctors, two nurses, a physiotherapist, a psychiatrist and a sports injuries therapist, who are there to meet
the needs of all students with any medical problem. Referral to other agencies and specialist services is available as required.
Please note that the Student Health Service does not cover the cost of prescribed medicine, hospitalisation, optical or dental
treatment. Students are therefore advised to have a thorough medical check-up before leaving home.
Students from countries other than EU countries are required to pay full charges for in-patient and outpatient services in a public hospital and all charges for doctors’ services, drugs and medicines. Students from non-EU countries should hold a comprehensive Health Insurance Policy to meet any costs accruing from health care treatment. Comprehensive health cover is a requirement for immigration registration (see 3.2 above).
