The Galway Bipolar Disorder Study
PLEASE NOTE THE GALWAY BIPOLAR STUDY IS NOT CURRENTLY RECRUITING
Bipolar Disorder is an illness characterised by extremes of mood, ranging from major depression to elation and psychosis. We are using MRI to investigate if structural changes in the brain may be in part responsible for these uncontrollable mood changes.
MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging; and uses a combination of magnetic and radiofrequency fields to produce exquisitely detailed anatomical pictures of the brain. Unlike a CT scan, no X-rays are used which makes the technique perfectly safe for routine use.
What does volunteering involve?
As a volunteer you would need to come to University Hospital College Galway to take part in 3 simple tests: an
MRI scan
(approx. 30 mins), a
blood test , and an
interview with a psychiatrist (approx. 1 hour).
Read more about the tests involved in the Bipolar Disorder Study here.
Your travel expenses will be paid and there will be a small amount of financial compensation for your time.
