Colm McDonald was appointed Professor of Psychiatry at National University of Ireland, Galway in June 2005 and also holds the post of visiting Professor at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London. A graduate of University College Dublin, he completed his basic clinical training on the St. John of God rotational scheme in psychiatry. In 1998 he moved to the Institute of Psychiatry in London, where he completed his clinical and research training and his PhD. His research centred upon neurobiological abnormalities associated with the major psychotic disorders of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and their relationship with genetic liability. His research projects have been supported by the Wellcome Trust, the Medical Research Council, the Royal Society and the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression.
