NUI Galway - COVID 19 Special Arrangements - Progressing with up to and including 10 ects

In line with Emergency Marks and Standards for the Academic Year 2020/2021, approved students will be allowed to progress to their next year of course and carry with them up to and including 10ects (failed modules from previous year) for the academic year 2021/2022 – these arrangements have been put in place in response to the global COVID-19 emergency

Do I sit Autumn Exams?

Yes, all students must sit Autumn Exams as scheduled

What do I need to do?

You don’t need to do anything. Your College will be in contact with eligible students following Autumn Exam results release

What is involved?

In September, if you receive written permission from the Dean of College or nominee following the release of your Autumn exams, you can choose to continue into  the next year of your course carrying up to 10 ects of failed modules only from this (20/21) year, as advised and agreed by your College.
Scenario:
You can progress to 3BC1, on passing 50 ects of 2BC1.
You will be carrying up to 10ects of failed modules, as advised and agreed by your College.

I have been granted permission to continue into the next year of course to carry up to and inclulding 10ects:  I would like to choose this option – what do I do next?

It is important that you discuss the following with your College:
1. the modules you need to repeat (Where a module is no longer available, you can discuss this with your Discipline/College Office)
AND
2.      You need to fully understand the workload for you in Academic year 21/22 i.e. combining the next year of your programme demands and the modules that you carried, potentially studying 70ects worth of modules.

Can I change the modules I have to repeat?

No.  You can only repeat the modules that you failed from the last academic year – 20/21.
Where a module is no longer available, you can discuss this with your Discipline/College Office

I have been granted permission to continue into the next year of course and carry up to and including 10ects: I would NOT like to choose this option – what do I do next?

Contact your Dean of College or nominee – advising them that you wish to repeat your failed year only.
You will register online for your repeat year and pay repeat fees for that course only. You will be expected to repeat only the failed modules up to 10 ects from previous year.

Will I have to pay fees if I carry credits?

Check the following Fees Office link - https://www.nuigalway.ie/student-fees/carrying5or10ects/   regarding fees you may need to pay.

What is the deadline to register if I carry credits?

Firstly,
You must be registered for your REPEAT YEAR by 10th September 2021 (Undergrads) and 28th September 2021 (Postgrads), at the latest.
Next,
You will need to confirm acceptance of the option to PROGRESS TO NEXT YEAR OF COURSE (you will receive an email with full details on this in September, if eligible),
Once this is confirmed by you, then you will be systematically registered as a student for your progressing year by the 18th September 2021.

To facilitate this progression of carrying up to and including 10 ects, you will be asked to agree to the following:
1. Repeat up to and include10 ects modules
2. Accept the terms and conditions of the repeat stream
3. Accept the terms and conditions of your progressing year
