The NUI Galway Mountaineering Club organises three different hikes each Sunday- short, medium and long. There's a walk for everyone! The Club provides a bus to and from the hikes. The bus will leave the Quadrangle at 9.30 AM and we return later in the evening. It's best to show up early, as the bus fills up quickly. It costs € 2 to join the Mountaineering Club and the bus costs € 8 for each day out. Be sure to bring some extra money with you as we'll stop into Joe Keane's pub on the way back to the university. The walks commence on the 20th of September 2009.
There are some essentials for hiking on Sunday. You must have a pair of hiking boots which come above the ankle, as the terrain can be quite rough. Trail shoes, runners and Wellingtons are not allowed, as these do not provide enough ankle support. Also, be aware that you cannot wear jeans, corduroys, or cotton pants, as these get cold and heavy when wet. We insist on these conditions, and for safety reasons we can't let you come hiking if you ignore these.
You should also bring along a packed lunch and at least 1.5 litres of
water. Also recommended are a change of clothes for when you get off the hills and waterproof trousers. On the website, there is a full list of the gear we suggest.
Climbing at the climbing wall in the NUI Galway Kingfisher Sports Centre has begun with introductory training sessions running on Tuesday and Thursday from 7 PM. Contact email@example.com to schedule a training session. Also, we have a trip to Wicklow planned for the 19th of March, 2010 weekend.
