The President of Ireland Young Researcher Award (PIYRA) is Science Foundation Ireland's most prestigious award for young researchers from around the world to carry out their research in third level institutions in Ireland. The award recognizes outstanding engineers and scientists who, early in their careers, have already demonstrated or shown exceptional potential for leadership at the frontiers of knowledge.

The only PIYRA awarded in 2008 was to Dr. Daniel Kelly of Trinity College Dublin’s Centre for Bio-engineering. Dr. Kelly’s research involves the investigation of the mechanical environment within joints such as the knee and hip with the ultimate goal being the repair of cartilage in joints caused by injury or diseases such as arthritis. Dr. Kelly’s research will be under the joint supervision of Dr. Mary Murphy, REMEDI and Dr. Patrick Prendergast, TCD.
