Stem Cells at the Forefront

April 11th 2011

An international group of teachers attended a three day course ‘Stem Cells at the Forefront’ at the European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences located in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Monterotondo, Italy last week.

This educational facility was created to bring science educators into the research lab for a unique hands-on encounter with state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques and to give scientists a chance to work with teachers.

Over three days teachers had the opportunity to work side-by-side with top scientists, perform experiments, attend seminars, visit the EMBL laboratories and preview educational resources available through the EuroStemCell consortium (www.eurostemcell.org).  Danielle Nicholson, Outreach Officer at REMEDI led sessions where educational tools addressing regenerative medicine and stem cell research were explored, shared and demonstrated.  REMEDI’s Debating Science Issues project was positively reviewed by the international delegates.  Many educators expressed interest in running the biomedical, bioethical debate series in their schools.

The aim of the European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences (ELLS) is to bridge the widening gap between research and schools. ELLS welcomes external scientists to visit the facility and work with the science education officers and teachers to develop new teaching material and to learn how to implement similar programmes at their own institutes
