UCC Honours Prof. Timothy O'Brien

June 20th 2011

Prof. Timothy O'Brien, the Director of REMEDI, was recently awarded the UCC Medical School Medal in recognition of extraordinary achievements by a UCC medical graduate.

Among Prof. O'Brien's many achievements is the development of cell and gene therapy approaches to vascular disease with a special focus on the nitric oxide of bioavailability.

Prof. O'Brien, who is also Professor of Medicine at NUI Galway and Consultant Endocrinologist at Galway University Hospital, established the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) in 2004 with significant funding from Science Foundation Ireland.  Since then, he has played a leadership role in greatly expanding REMEDI's profile as Ireland's only centre for stem cell research and gene therapy, attracting millions of euros worth of research grants as well as researchers and PhD students from around the world to come to Galway.

Prof. O'Brien has also been involved in many initiatives at enhancing the profile of clinical and medical research, in Galway as well as Ireland.  He is also global co-editor of the leading journal, Stem Cell Therapy, and he has served as a reviewer for many other international journals.
