Professor Cathal Moran is the Professor and Chair of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at Trinity College Dublin and a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sports Surgery Clinic, Dublin. His special interest is in sports surgery of the knee and shoulder, including ligament, cartilage, rotator cuff and instability surgery.

Professor Moran completed his training in Ireland and the US. He undertook his undergraduate medical degree, BSc in Pharmacology, MD Degree and PhD research studies at NUI Galway and REMEDI. He later completed training in the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Shoulder Fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery and Cornell Medical College in New York, the Cartilage Repair Centre at Harvard Medical School / Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and Antwerp Orthopaedic Centre in Belgium. He is a Principal Investigator with a special interest in cartilage and ligament research at Trinity Centre for Bioengineering, RCSI Bioengineering and AMBER Research Centres. He is an Associate PI at REMEDI with a special interest in cartilage repair and regeneration. .

Researcher in

Research Project Area:

We are investigating the role of mesenchymal stem cells and tissue engineering in cartilage and meniscal repair. In addition to the orthobiologic faculty & researchers at REMEDI, including Professor Frank Barry, Dr Mary Murphy, Dr Valerie Barron and Professor Timothy O Brien, this work involves a collaboration with Dr Scott Rodeo, Dr Russell Warren and Dr Suzanne Maher at the Hospital for Special Surgery / Weill-Cornell Medical College in New York and also with Harvard Medical School in Boston. There is a particular focus on translational research in this program.
