General Description of the Organisation

The National University of Ireland (NUI), Galway is the largest and oldest university based in the west of Ireland, employing in excess of 2,000 staff with a 17,000 strong student population.  NUI Galway is a research-led University and has an overall ranking of 284th in the QS world university rankings for 2013 and 314 in the Times Higher Education world rankings for 2013/2014.  Its research & teaching infrastructure is well established, of world calibre and strongly supported. In the past ten years alone, the University invested in excess of €400 million.  In 2013, University income exceeded €220,000 million of which over €50 million was from externally funded research - in excess of €50 million from FP7 including successes in ERC, Marie Curie, Cooperation and Capacities programmes.

 

In October 2013 NUI Galway was awarded the HR Excellence in Research Logo by the European Commission in recognition of our commitment in implementing the principles of European Charter & Code for Researchers.  The Charter and Code includes 40 principles and requirements which specifies the roles, responsibilities and entitlements of researchers as well as of employers and/or funders of researchers.

The European Research Council (ERC) has launched the first call to the ERC Advanced Grant scheme under the Horizon 2020 framework programme.  The Advanced Grant allows exceptional established research leaders of any nationality and any age to pursue ground-breaking, high-risk projects that open new directions in their respective research fields or other domains. Open Access in Horizon 2020 - All projects receiving Horizon 2020 funding will have the obligation to make sure any peer-reviewed journal article which they publish is openly accessible, free of charge.  The fact sheet should be read in parallel with the “Guidelines on Open Access to Scientific Publications and Research Data in Horizon 2020”

IP Management in Proposal Stage – at the proposal stage” the fact sheet intends to assist applicants in Horizon 2020 with the management of intellectual property in the proposal stage of their project. Even though Horizon 2020 research and innovation activities are implemented through different forms of funding particularly grants, prizes, procurement and financial instruments, this fact sheet deals solely with grants.

IP Management in Implementation Stage – at the Implementation Stage” the grant agreement, as well as the consortium agreement are signed.  In terms of Intellectual Property, the implementation stage assumes particular importance as the exploitation and dissemination of project results is a key objective of Horizon 2020 projects. This fact sheet highlights the steps to follow so as to pave the way for the exploitation and dissemination of the Intellectual Property generated during the implementation of the project.

 

Horizon 2020, Personalising Health & Care(PHC) Stage 1 calls, there were 41 Irish coordinator applications with 17 going through to Stage 2.  Irelands success was 41% which is above the EU average, please see below an overview of the total Stage 1 PHC applications to the EU Commission
