Professor Eamon O’Shea
Eamon O’Shea is a personal Professor in the Department of Economics and Director of the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology (ICSG) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. He holds an MA from University College Dublin, an MSc from University of York and a PhD from University of Leicester. He has had 39 papers published in refereed journals over the period 1990 to 2007 inclusive, including publications in top-ranked journals such as the Journal of Health Economics, Social Science and Medicine, Applied Economics, European Journal of Public Health, Age and Ageing, Ageing and Society, Health Policy, Economic and Social Review, International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry and the Journal of Mental Health Policy and Economics. Professor O’Shea has also published inter-disciplinary work in other highly-ranked journals such as: the Journal of Parasitology; Dementia; International Journal of Rehabilitation Research; and the Journal of Clinical Nursing.
Professor O’Shea has authored/co-authored 14 books and monographs, mainly in the field of ageing and social policy. His most recent book is titled: Policy and Practice for Dementia Care in Ireland and deals with the main issues for people with dementia in the country. He has been responsible for 16 commissioned policy reports. These reports were commissioned by national and international agencies, including the National Council on Ageing and Older People, The Department of Health and Children, Health Research Board, the European Commission and the European Council. He has also contributed 22 chapters to various books, mainly on ageing and inequality issues. Professor O’Shea was Chair of the National Economic and Social Forum Expert Group on Care of the Elderly in 2005/06. His work has been influential in setting the agenda for the ongoing reform of the long-stay sector in Ireland.
