Beaufort Marine Biodiscovery
Marine Biodiscovery is fundamentally directed towards using nature's own technology for the production of goods and services. This project aims to develop Ireland's capabilities and infrastructures in marine research, biotechnology, food and medical research to establish eventually new businesses in the areas of specific pharmaceuticals, biomaterials for medical and diagnostic purposes and functional foods. Research institutions in NUIG, QUB and UCC together with the Marine Institute (MI) are collaborating as the Irish Marine Biodiscovery Research Group focusing on delivering the overall objectives of the project.
PROJECT AIMS:
- To develop research capacity in the priority area of marine biodiscovery through the funding of a research team that will contribute to the development of a distributed national centre of excellence in Ireland in Marine Biodiscovery.
Aims related to research undertaken at the ISRG:
- Genetic characterization of Ireland's marine Biodiversity.
- Creation of a strong, networked research capability in taxonomy, screening and characterization of algae, sponges and other marine invertebrate fauna.
