Exact funding for 2010/11 programmes is currently under review. Please return for updates.
The SSRC sponsors publications in the social sciences, especially with an interdisciplinary focus. We will support basic production costs such as production of camera-ready copy or other subvention which the publisher may require to make the monograph commercially viable. The emphasis is upon high quality monographs where it’s recognised that subvention is necessary because the market is small. Any publications accepted will be subjected to a rigorous external refereeing process and it would be expected that any proposed publishers would be internationally recognised publishers of academic monographs.
All proposals should include details as follows:
1. The general point of the text: its raison d’etre.
2. Its chief advantages: its originality, its particular contributions to its subject, the special qualifications of its author(s) to write it.
3. Its overall structure and chapter contents.
4. The background of the work: the research from which it has emanated.
5. The relation of this text to others in the field: the gaps it fills.
6. Its market: what sort of groups, professional or otherwise, and how many people are likely to be interested in it; whether it could be used in connection with specialised courses in third-level institutions.
7. The academic biographies of the author(s).
8. Authors/editors should also indicate whether they have sent their proposal to any other publisher.
9. They should furnish the names of four to five suitably qualified persons to whom the Board may apply as referees for the text.
We sponsor a series of conference workshops. It is envisaged that these workshops will involve close collaboration between contributors, who will circulate papers in advance. The papers may be made available online as SSRC Working Papers if so desired. We should like to facilitate a situation in which the participants meet over a period of three to four days, so that each paper can be discussed in detail by all members of the group. We intend that this will develop into a prestigious and internationally reputable series of meetings.
Funding will be contributed at the discretion of the Board, depending on the countries of origin of the participants and other costs. Any applications should include a detailed costing, which will be used as a basis to decide the final sum. Payments will be based upon receipts received.
The Board of the SSRC wishes to offer up to €1,450 annually for a SPECIAL VISITING SCHOLAR, who would be expected to visit NUI, Galway for approximately a week at any time during the current academic year, during which period he or she would deliver a public lecture organised by the SSRC in conjunction with his or her sponsor. The lecture would be made available to the SSRC for publication.
The SSRC will consider applications for small grants of up to a maximum of €500 to sponsor individual initiatives in the social sciences, for instance, an initial meeting of potential research partners, for conference travel expences, contribution toward fieldwork expenses, support for a postgraduate researcher and suchlike.
Applications for SSRC seed money funding should reach The SSRC, St Declan’s, Distillery Road, NUI Galway (or by emailing
