7th Framework Programme (FP7) of the European Union

The Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) has just been launched with the first calls for proposals under FP7 published on 22 December 2006. FP7 is divided into 4 main sections

• "Cooperation" - Cooperation will have ten thematic priorities.

1. Health

2. Food, agriculture and fisheries, biotechnology

3. Information/communication technologies

4. Nanosciences and nanotechnologies, materials and new product technologies

5. Energy

6. Environment and climate change

7. Transport (including aeronautics)

8. Socio-economic sciences and the humanities

9. Space

10. Security

• "Ideas" - This will cover basic research or "Frontier Research" and may be very similar to SFI.  According to the EU, the objective here "is to enhance the dynamism, creativity and excellence of European research at the frontier of knowledge. This is to be done by supporting "investigator-driven" research projects carried out across all fields by individual teams in competition at the European level. Projects will be funded on the basis of proposals presented by researchers on subjects of their choice and evaluated on the sole criterion of excellence as judged by peer review."

• "People" - This will cover the Marie Curie Fellowships

• "Capacities" This will cover

  3. Regions of Knowledge

  5. Science and Society

  6. Inco (Horizontal)
