NUI Galway Scheme (under section 11 of the Official Languages Act 2003)
Scéim na hOllscoile, What exactly is it?
In July 2005, NUI Galway prepared Scéim na hOllscoile under section 11 of the Official Languages Act 2003. The main aim of the scheme is to expand the provision of Irish language services in the University in academic and administrative areas and in general services. On the completion of this first three year Scheme (October 2008) a service through the medium of Irish will be provided to the public in thirteen specific areas of the University's operations. This initiative is central to the creation of an exemplary bilingual campus here in NUI Galway. See below for list of services.
A list of services available/to be provided:
- President's Office
- Switchboard
- University reception Service
- Office of the Secretary
- Office of the Secretary for Academic Affairs
- Student Services Office
- Human Resources Office
- Admissions Office
- Buildings Office
- Bursar's Office
- Press and Information Office/Áras Fáilte
- James Hardiman Library
- Exams Office
- An increase in the number of bilingual services and an improvement in the standard of said services is expected throughout the University as a result of the implementation of the first scheme.
- A bilingual service will be available in the specific areas of operations aforementioned before the end of the first scheme and it will be your right as a customer to demand those services.
- It is an integral part of the scheme that services through the medium of Irish be available on a continuous basis.
