Biography

Dr. Jenny Hanafin is the Earth Observation Programme Manager at ICHEC. Her extensive experience in many aspects of remote sensing, includes operating satellite sensors for EUMETSAT while a postdoc at Imperial College London, to developing a system to retrieve atmospheric humidity from the Ordnance Survey Ireland network of GPS receivers for use in the Met Éireann forecast model.

Dr Hanafin joined the Environmental Science team in April 2018. Prior to joining ICHEC, she was Earth Observation and Modelling Manager at a leading oceanographic company in Ireland with responsibility for a team producing model and satellite earth observation data products and services for public and commercial users. Since joining ICHEC, her responsibilities have included project lead for a number of EO projects, including: INFER - using satellite data to monitor inland water quality for the Irish Environmental Protection Agency; AIREO - establishing AI-ready Earth Observation dataset specifications and best practices for the European Space Agency (ESA); ESA Atmospheric Validation Data Centre - a system to merge satellite and in situ atmospheric validation data; and Towards an Automated Surface Water Retrieval System for Synthetic Aperture Radar.

Her qualifications include B. Sc. in Marine Science, National University of Ireland, Galway and Ph. D. in Physical Oceanography and Meteorology at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami.

Research Interests

My interests focus on satellite data, for oceanographic and atmospheric research initially, but currently for all types of applications. In our group, we use Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for flood detection, Interferometric SAR for ground motion measurement and optical satellite sensors for water quality and seaweed mapping.
