Rosalind Clarke
Rosalind Clarke joined Queen’s College Galway as a sixteen-year old student of the "First Arts" syllabus. The subjects available were English, Latin, Greek or a foreign language, and Mathematics or Experimental Physics. She had won scholarships in both literary and science divisions and opted for the science scholarship. She took Mathematics, Experimental Physics (with Professor Anderson) and Chemistry (with Professor Alfred Senier). Rosalind Clarke was inspired by Senier’s approach to Chemistry and she won first place in Chemistry and second place in Experimental Physics and Mathematics. In 1904 she took the honours BA degree in Chemistry and Experimental Physics at the Royal University. She later studied in Bonn under Professor Auschutz and taught at Rochelle Seminary in Cork. In 1910 she was appointed Assistant to Professor Senier in the renamed, University College Galway, where she remained a member of the academic staff until 1942. She was awarded a D.Sc. degree for her research in 1914.
