Biography

I studied chemistry at the University of Padova (Italy) where I received the MChem Degree in Inorganic and Physical Chemistry in 2000 and, subsequently, the PhD in Chemical Sciences in 2004. After one year of postdoctoral research at the same university, I took up a two-year Marie Curie Intra-European postdoctoral fellowship and, afterwards, a Körber Foundation postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Edinburgh (UK).
I returned to Italy in late 2007 and, after a short period as Senior Researcher, in April 2008 I was appointed Assistant Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Department of Chemical Sciences of the University of Padova.
In February 2013, I was appointed Lecturer (Below the Bar) in Chemistry at the School of Chemistry of the NUI Galway.
My research interests are within the field of bioinorganic and medicinal chemistry, focusing on the interaction between metal complexes and biologically-relevant macromolecules in order to develop new potential anticancer agents. Specifically, my professional experience includes the synthesis of coordination compounds (Sn, Pt, Pd, Au, Ru, Zn, Cu) and the use of spectroscopic techniques (mainly mono- and multidimensional NMR, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy) to characterize the novel metal derivatives and study their properties and mechanism of action under physiological-like conditions. My current research focuses on the design of metal-based anticancer and imaging agents targeting specific biomarkers up-regulated in tumor cells for the targeted chemotherapy and diagnosis.
I am coauthor of 38 papers published in international peer-reviewed journals (cit. metrics 2002-2019: times cited 2,609, h-index 25, average I.F. 4.454), 3 book chapters, 2 patents and 83 scientific contributions presented at national and international conferences, including 27 oral/invited lectures.
To date, I have supervised to completion 22 undergraduate, 2 Erasmus+, 1 MSc and 1 PhD students. My research group is currently comprised of 4 PhD students.
I am member of the Editorial Board of Recent Patents on Anti-Cancer Drug Discovery (Bentham Science Publishers), and I act regularly as a reviewer for journals published by the major scientific publishing houses.
I am member of the Society of Biological Inorganic Chemistry, the American Chemical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC). I am also member of the Standing Committee of the Irish Biological Inorganic Chemistry Society and, since August 2019, member of the Royal Society of Chemistry - Republic of Ireland Local Section.

Research Interests

My research interests are within the field of bioinorganic and medicinal chemistry, focusing on the interaction between metal complexes and biologically-relevant macromolecules in order to develop new potential anticancer agents.

Teaching Interests

I teach chemistry-related subjects across the whole undergraduate programme (from 1st to 4th year) and also at postgraduate level.
My topics range from foundation chemistry (BSc (Undenominated)) to advanced inorganic and analytical chemistry (BSc Chemistry, BSc Biopharmaceutical Chemistry, MSc Chemistry (Research) and PhD Chemistry) within a number of modules, including lectures, tutorials and practicals.
I currently coordinate one 1st year Module (CH101 - Chemistry) and two 3rd year Modules (CH307 - Inorganic Chemistry and CH334 - Experimental Chemistry II (Inorganic Practicals)).
