Biography

Dr. Marianela Zanolal holds a Degree in Biology, an Environmental Chemistry technician degree and two Masters, one in Advanced Biotechnology and other in Secondary Education, all from the University of Malaga (Spain). Dr. Zanolla developed her PhD in Biology at University of Malaga within the ALIAN (ALgas Invasoras de Andalucia, invasive algae from Andalucia) project. The aim of this research project was to assess the impact, extension and ecological characteristic of all invasive seaweeds affecting the Andalusian coastlines. Her PhD focused mainly of Asparagopsis taxiformis and Caulerpa racemosa. After her PhD, Dr. Zanolla worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the University of Malaga with Prof. Dr. Maria Altamirano Jeschke and Dr. Raquel Carmona within the same project. During her PhD and the Postdoctoral contract, Dr. Zanolla developed collaboration projects with the University of Manoa at Hawaii, EEUU (Dr. Alison Sherwood), The Australian Institute of Marine Science, Australia (Dr. Nikos Andreakis) and the University of Kobe, Japan (Dr. Hiroshi Kawai) Today, Dr. Zanolla is Postdoctoral Researcher in Dr. Dagmar B. Stengel's Group working on the project “A National Marine Biodiscovery Laboratory”. This project is held in collaboration and funded by with the Marine Institute (Ireland). In this project she deals with sampling and identification of algae, culturing seaweeds of economic interest and performing experiments aimed at optimizing culture conditions of targeted metabolites in seaweeds.
