Biography

To date, Dr. Logue's research has focused on understanding cell death/cell stress response pathways including how they impact on inflammatory pathways and the relevance of this to diseases including cancer. Following completion of her PhD specialising in ER stress signaling, Dr. Logue undertook her postdoctoral training investigating the cross-talk between cell death and inflammatory processes in Prof. Seamus Martin's group at Trinity College Dublin. In 2012 Dr. Logue returned to the Apoptosis Research Centre in NUI Galway. Since returning to NUI Galway Dr Logue's research interests have focused on understanding how stress response pathways, in particular the Unfolded Protein Response, can influence the secretome of cells and how this contributes to cancer progression and helps shape post-therapy responses. In 2016 Dr. Logue was awarded a prestigious SFI Starting Investigator Grant to investigate how IRE1 (a key mediator of the Unfolded Protein Response) can regulate the secretome of triple negative breast cancer cells.     

Research Interests

Role of cell stress pathways in the cancer cell secretome
Cancer cells are in constant communication with their surrounding environment. Messengers released by cancer cells can act on other cancer cells but importantly they can also cause normal healthy cells to undergo changes, which aid cancer progression. In this way cancer cells can “hijack” non-cancerous cells helping increase tumour progression and spread. For example, messengers released by cancer cells can stop our body’s defense mechanism - the immune system - from recognizing cancer cells and even trick it into accelerating cancer growth. Building on my background in cell death and cell stress signalling my research focuses on understanding how cancer cell communication is controlled. In particular my work focuses on understanding how stress responses control the composition of the cancer cell secretome (all secreted factors released from a cell) and the impact this has on the tumour microenvironment. In particular I am interested in exploring the role of stress responses in dictating how the cancer cell secretome respond to current therapeutic treatments such as chemotherapy. Recently, I was awarded a SFI Starting Investigator Grant to investigate how IRE1, a key mediator of the unfolded protein response, can impact the secretome of triple negative cancer cells. 

Contribution of UPR signalling to pro-inflammatory responses
Activation of the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) has been reported in immune cells following Toll Like Receptors (TLRs) activation. How UPR signalling impacts on immune cell responses is not understood. My researches focuses on determining how UPR signalling contributes to inflammatory processes and using this knowledge design new therapeutic interventions to reduce inflammation in disease settings. Currently, my research focuses on targeting the UPR as a novel therapeutic strategy for the treatment of sepsis.
