Fergal Curtin
Fergal Curtin was appointed in October last year as Research Assistant in Economics by the Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit (SEMRU) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded through the Beaufort Marine Research Award, which is carried out under the Sea Change Strategy and the Strategy for Science Technology and Innovation (2006-2013), with the support of the Marine Institute, funded under the Marine Research Sub-Programme of the National Development Plan 2007–2013.
Fergal is based with the Irish Maritime Development Office (IMDO) in Dublin supporting its Shipping Market program and he acts as a conduit between IMDO-SEMRU to strengthen the collaborative research interaction of both bodies. The primary research undertaken will contribute to the preparation and publication of peer reviewed articles, research bulletins and policy briefings to both Government & Industry in the thematic area of the maritime economics. A key aspect of Fergal’s role working as a shipping market analyst will be to monitor the causes and effects that changes in both the domestic and global economy has on supply and demand of port and shipping services. The role also studies how the various interaction industrial segments interact in the maritime cluster and associated supply chain (Ports, Container, oil tankers, LNG carriers, Ro-Ro, bulk, ancillary services etc.).
Prior to taking up this position, Fergal worked in a number of financial services/consulting positions both in Ireland and the United States. He recently completed a one year maritime economics internship with the IMDO having also previously participated in its Summer research bursary scheme.
