Michael D Higgins Elected to the office of President of Ireland
The School of Political Science and Sociology is delighted to heartily congratulate its former staff member Michael D Higgins on his recent election to the office of President of Ireland.
Former colleague of Michael D’s and Head of the School, Professor Chris Curtin passed on his congratulations to Michael D and on behalf of all staff and students, current and former, wished him well in the seven years ahead.
Michael D served as a member of staff of the then Department of Political Science and Sociology from the 1970’s until the early 1990’s.
He will be fondly remembered by hundreds of students for his lively introductions to the discipline of sociology in his first year lectures and in his courses taught throughout the BA degree programme. He also participated in the extension BA programmes then taught by UCG throughout the West and is remembered in particular for his passionate espousal of community development, human rights and a humanist social science. His lectures and inputs were always characterised by inspiring engagement with the topics at hand and he frequently illustrated his scholarly enquiry with knowledge and insight from his political life at a national and international level.
Michael D was also a graduate of the Department, having taken his degree as a mature student in the early 1960’s. As an undergraduate he served as vice auditor of the Literary and Debating Society (1963-1964), Auditor (1964-1965) and was also President of the Student’s Union in 1964-1965.
