LAUNCH OF REPORT ON OLDER WOMEN WORKERS' ACCESS TO PENSIONS
Global Women's Studies (NUIG), together with the Irish Centre for Social Gerontology (NUIG) and Queen’s University Belfast, have produced a CARDI-funded research report on
Older Women Workers’ Access to Pensions: Vulnerabilities, Perspectives and Strategies. Former president of ICTU

DUVVURY LAUNCHES UNFPA REPORT ON WORLD POPULATION
Dr. Nata Duvvury spoke at the October 26, 2011, launch of UNFPA’s report,
State of the World Population, 2011: People and Possibilities in a World of 7 Billion. Jan O’Sullivan, Minister of State, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, launched the report. Dr Jacqueline Mahon, Senior Policy Advisor, Global Health and Health Systems, UNFPA, introduced the report and Dr Duvvury commented on the report, based on her extensive international development expertise. The event was organised by the Irish Family Planning Association and held at the Shelburne Hotel, Dublin.
GLOBAL WOMEN'S STUDIES STUDENTS AWARDED IRCHSS POSTGRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS
Caroline Forde and
Aura Lounasma, PhD students in the Global Women's Studies programme in the School of Political Science and Sociology, were each awarded an IRCHSS postgraduate scholarship in the 2011 round. These highly competitive and prestigious scholarship have a success rate of less than 15% and are open to PhD students studying at Irish Universities in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
RELIGION, GENDER AND HUMAN RIGHTS CONFERENCE
An international conference, funded by the European Science Foundation and Linköping University, and sponsored by NUI Galway, took place on 21-25 June 2011 in Sweden. Entitled Religion, Gender and Human Rights: Challenges for Multicultural and Democratic Societies, the conference was an initiative of the Gender and Public Sphere thematic group within Gender ARC. The conference aimed to move gender from the periphery to the centre of debate on the role of religion in public and political life in democratic and democratising multicultural societies. The IRCHSS Research Development Initiative and the Department of Foreign Affairs have awarded a research grant to Dr.
Sinisa Malesevic (PI), Dr.
Niall O Dochartaigh, Prof.
Bill Schabas, and Prof.
Tom Lodge from UL for a project entitled 'The Mediated Settlement of Armed Conflicts in Northern Ireland and Bosnia and Herzegovina: Lessons for Conflict Resolution in African States? worth ca 48,000 Euros. This project is a result of a joint initiative between UL and NUI, Galway. The project involves participants from the School of Political Science and Sociology and the Irish Centre for Human Rights at NUI, Galway and the Department of Politics and Public Administration at UL.

Brendan Duddy acted as a secret intermediary between the British government and the IRA over a period of twenty years and donated his extensive private papers to NUI Galway in 2009. Michael Banton (Bristol University) spoke at the School on
'Superseding “Race” in Social Science' on
19 February. For over fifty years Professor Banton has been a world leading authority in the study of ethnic relations and racism. He is author of numerous books including
Racial Consciousness (1988),
Discrimination (1994),
International Action against Racial Discrimination (1996),
Ethnic and Racial Consciousness (1997),
Racial Theories (1997), and
The International Politics of Race (2002). Professor Banton was also a chairman of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
