The
Gender, Empowerment and Globalisation Research Cluster brings
together academic staff of the
Global
Women's Studies programme as well as members of the School working on
gender-focused areas. The cluster is committed to the development of gender-focused research across a range of issues and disciplines within the School of Political Science and Sociology. Research in this area investigates the operation of gendered power relations, gender inequalities, changing notions of gender identity, and the challenges of achieving women's empowerment in Ireland and beyond in a context of globalisation.
We live in a rapidly changing world characterised by intensive globalisation across cultural, economic, political and social arenas. This poses complex questions for how we understand identity, belonging and social relationships from the local and community level to national and global arenas. It also presents new challenges for how we (re)define and realise social inclusion, development, peace, equality and human rights, multilevel governance, rule of law, and democracy. The Gender Research Cluster foregrounds the gender dimensions and women's experiences of these questions and challenges. This means paying attention to the gender specific impacts of globalisation and global issues in everyday life. It also means deepening understanding of how gender, the public/private divide, and socially-constructed sexuality are implicated in today's 'big questions' (e.g. economic crises, the reemergence of religion, migration, conflict, disease pandemics, human trafficking, etc.).
