Transport, Mobility and Sustainable Consumption of Distance: Economic Incentives and Modal Shift
This thesis is integrated in the broader framework of the project "ConsEnSus"(Consumption, Environment and Sustainability). Given the centrality of transport and mobility in the transition to sustainable consumption, this thesis is aimed at a) exploring both theoretically and empirically the socio-cultural determinants of transport and mobility in Ireland and b) identifying and evaluating ways of encouraging sustainable mobility patterns and transport uses, particularly through the use of economic incentives. Fishers: The forgotten scientists
For 60 years the fisheries management paradigm hasbeen dominated by policies influenced by advice from natural scientists. In this period global fisheries have collapsed and fish populations areat about 10% of their historical maximum. Policy makers are now lookingbeyond natural science to find methods to arrest declines in fisheries. This research is aimed at finding out if fishers themselves cancontribute to fisheries management. In particular it is ascertainingwhether fishers have unique ecological, social and economic knowledgeabout the environment that they operate in (i.e. the sea). The researchis also looking at ways to mobilise any knowledge that the fishers mayhave into marine policy and management. (PS: B. Flynn, MI funding) |

Transport, Mobility and Sustainable Consumption of Distance: Behavioural Change 2: Guidelines for the Use of Virtual Mobility Tools (VMT)
The CONSENSUS project is a cross-border household analysis of consumption, environment and sustainability in Ireland. As part of the overall project this PhD will develop and test a pilot scheme aimed at exploring the advantages and drawbacks of virtual mobility options (e.g., teleworking, travel information, online shopping and banking). The project will be carried out in collaboration with DERI (Digital Enterprise Research Institute) at NUI, Galway. The theoretical part of this project will compare policy measures in Ireland and Europe and analyse examples of international best practice regarding 'virtualmobility' (PS: H. Rau, ConsEnSus-EPA Fellowship) |

Fishers' Knowledge and Participation in Fisheries Management: The Case of Celtic Sea Cod
The PhD is being undertaken within the Irish Fishers' Knowledge Project, which his part of the Irish Fisheries Science Research Partnership and funded by the Marine Institute. The research consists of semi-structured interviews with fishers and will document fishers' knowledge of cod stocks in the Celtic Sea as well as focusing on its use in evaluating and managing these stocks. The research will also consider issues surrounding the participation of fishers' in the management regime. (PS: B. Flynn, MI funding) |

Reconnecting Children and Nature? A Sociological Study of Environmental Education in Ireland
The project will examine the relationship between environmental education (EE) and Irish people’s environmental attitudes and behaviour. An innovative multi-method approach will be adopted to capture the views and practices of EE practitioners, school children and their parents (PS: H. Rau; IRCHSS Fellowship 2009-present) |
