Everybody in Ireland is looking for people with languages
’Everybody in Ireland is looking for people with languages’, according to Peter Cosgrove, of CPL Recruitment Group. Speaking on Morning Ireland on RTE Radio 1, Mr Cosgrove emphasised the importance of competence in foreign languages, and spoke of a ’huge demand for multilingual staff.’
This comes as further confirmation of the important role played by languages in preparing graduates for the world of work. Employability is frequently enhanced by a graduate having a good knowledge of a foreign language. Knowing a language such as French, German, Spanish or Italian can give the graduate that extra edge and make him or her stand out when applying for jobs.
This reinforces the message that employers consistently convey to teachers of languages, i.e., that knowing a language helps get you noticed by a potential employer and can assist you to land the job that you want.
Currently, for example, graduates with knowledge of the financial area, who also have knowledge of a foreign language, are in great demand. According to CPL’s website: ’Despite the media’s focus on layoffs and closures, multilingual talent with financial exposure have absolutely nothing to fear.’
