Background and Qualifications
Stanislava acquired her B.S. degree in Psychology at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia in 1993. Subsequently she undertook a taught and research masters degree programme at the University of Belgrade, which she completed in 1999. She acquired her doctoral degree in 2003 from the University of Belgrade, having undertaken her research at the University of Leipzig and the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany.
The first academic position Stanislava undertook in 1995 was at the University of Novi Sad. After acquiring her doctoral degree she worked at the Department of Psychology at the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich teaching undergraduate and Master degree seminars in experimental psychology. In Ireland Stanislava taught a general psychology course accredited by the Institute of Commercial Management (UK) at the Galway Cultural Institute during the academic year 2005/2006. At the same time she also worked as a contract lecturer for the Department of Psychology at NUI Galway teaching psycholinguistics for the undergraduate programme in the Speech and Language Therapy. From 2007 to 2009 Stanislava worked as a part time lecturer in the Speech and Language Therapy Department at the University of Limerick teaching on the Master degree programme. Currently, she is a lecturer at the School of Health Sciences, NUI Galway. Since 2007 Stanislava is a consultant for Children’s Progress Incorporated, New York, advising on educational assessment design.
Research Interests
Syntactic Characteristics of Verbs
In her doctoral thesis, Stanislava examined the syntactic characteristics of German verbs, in particular the number of complements and the number of complementation frames. Results indicated that the number of complements had an inhibitory influence on the processing of transitive verbs while the number of complementation frames facilitated verb processing. The influence of the number of complements, the number of complementation frames and verb lemma frequency were encompassed in a single measure of the informational complexity of verbs: the information residual (IR). Following from the work on syntactic characteristics of German verbs there is a line of currently developing research into syntactic characteristics of verbs in English and French. Given that in different languages verbs with the equivalent meaning can be combined with different syntactic frames, we are interested in the way those verbs are represented in L1 and L2, and in the process of their translation (in collaboration with Sarah Berthaud and Prof. Jane Conroy of the Discipline of French at NUI Galway).
Bilingualism
The use of both the English and Irish languages in Irish society and education offers the possibility of comparing the acquisition of both languages. Some children who grow up as monolingual English speakers are immersed into all Irish schools where during the first few years the exclusive medium of teaching is Irish. Native speakers of Irish are exposed to English through media from a very early age, and also through education later in life. All children educated through English learn Irish as a second language. We compare narrative production, use of grammar, code switching and intrusions in those different groups. This research is conducted within the Bilingualism Research Group. The group recently started collaboration with Dr. Conchúr Ó Giollagáin from Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge and secured scholarships for two PhD students awarded by An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta (COGG).
Language Impairments
There is a currently an ongoing examination of cognitive processes that underlie Developmental Language Impairments (DLI). We aim to gain an insight into the relations between noise exclusion in visual and auditory modality and language problems in subgroups of children with DLI. This work is being done within SLI Group.
