Course rationale:
The use of genetically modified organisms (GMO) is closely controlled and monitored by the Environmental Protection Agency. Principal investigators wishing to use GMOs must apply for a licence from the EPA and must meet certain strict criteria before they can use them. Training in the management and use of GMOs is a central means by which PIs can demonstrate that they are complying with the legal requirements for GMO usage.
Course aim:
To provide up to date guidance on the relevant legislation, on the licence application process and on the basic techniques for safe GMO usage.
Course objectives:
: To raise the level of awareness on the necessity for strict legal compliance
To identify and assess the risks posed by GMOs
To manage safety issues in a laboratory using GMOs
To permit direct dialogue with an experienced EPA Inspector
