Testimonials of staff who received funding support through the FEP scheme
Rena Lyons, School Health Sciences
I registered for a part-time PhD in Bristol in 2007. I specifically chose Bristol because I located a supervisor there with a background in Speech and Language Therapy and the appropriate expertise. The use of videoconferencing and later Skype reduced the need for frequent visits to Bristol. I came across the NUI Galway Further Education Policy (FEP) a few years into my PhD, through which I claimed some of my fees. The HR staff were always helpful and processed my applications efficiently. My experience of the Further Education Policy has been very positive. I have now completed my PhD. Through my studies in Bristol, I have learned about the PhD process in other institutions and I have developed international networks, which will benefit the Discipline of Speech and Language Therapy in NUI Galway.

I have just completed the AMBA accredited EMBA programme at NUI Galway, as a direct result of receiving funding from the FEP scheme. This 2 year part-time programme has stimulated my appetite for education through a variety of learning techniques, including interactive lectures, guest lecturers from leaders in industry, site visits, and a mentoring and coaching programme. The programme provides a forum that inspires students to think differently and more strategically in the work place. The process for applying and being considered for FEP funding is very straight forward and efficient. I feel very lucky to have been considered and accepted as a candidate for the FEP funding scheme. As a result of completing this course, I have gained both personal and professional growth particularly regarding inter-personnel and leadership skills which I expect will influence my career from here on.
