K-Net (EU Framework7)
The objective of K-NET is to explore the fundamental problem: how different services to manage social interactions in a networked enterprise can be used to enhance knowledge and knowledge management (KM) services. The key hypothesis of K-NET is that the context under which knowledge is collectively generated and managed can be used to enhance this knowledge for its further use within intra-enterprise collaboration. By extracting the context under which the knowledge is generated in a network (e.g. goals, teams, temporal and spatial aspects), it is possible to enrich it to be more effectively used within future work. This three year project started in 2008.
AmI4SME (EU Framework7)
This ongoing EU funded research project aims to develop ambient intelligence technology for systemic innovation in manufacturing SMEs. The international consortium includes two Irish SMEs who will deploy ambient intelligence solutions being provided by DERI. These solutions are emerging as semantically rich smart tagging system for shop floor and inventory control. Other technologies currently being evaluated are the use of personal digital assistants for job planning and simple speech recognition and voice commands for rugged environments. This three year project will conclude in September 2008.
DERI-Lion (Science Foundation of Ireland)
In 2003 DERI was established with a €12m grant from SFI. This grant funded three research areas including my work in Innovation Management. The iTeams concept has been expanded to include problems associated with innovation across extended enterprises which are characterised by ubiquitous and heterogeneous information management systems. The iTeams functionality is now extended to metadata harvesting and semantically enabled inference. Other features include semantic search, desktop knowledge management and peer to peer exchange of innovation knowledge.
Astellas Pharmaceuticals, Co. Kerry.
Astellas Pharma (aka Fujisawa) is a research-based pharmaceutical company that develops and manufactures finished pharmaceutical drugs for the treatment of urological disorders, immunological and inflammatory disorders. This project involved the development and specification of a production management system (PMS). Elements of the project included developing present and future enterprise models, the creation of a functional specification and the development of the bid specification document. The bid specification process resulted in the selection of a software vendor to develop and install the PMS system. The project was completed in the period 1994-1995.
Boston Scientific, Galway.
Boston Scientific is a medical technologies company that develops and manufactures vascular and endoscopic devices. This research project involved the development of a knowledge management system for the engineering department between 2001-2003. A number of in-house Masters researchers have since worked on applying the system in the quality department and in the R&D department.
Medtronic, Galway.
Medtronic is a medical technologies company that develops and manufactures endoscope devices. Research projects at this plant have included the development of a quality information system 1993-1995, product innovation management for networked organizations 1997-2001, and an employee orientation and retention programme 2000-2002.
Hewlett-Packard, Galway.
Hewlett-Packard is a European Software headquarters engaged in development, multi-lingual technical support and telemarketing of software products. This four year research project began in 2001 with the implementation of my iTeams and FrameworkX systems for managing key performance indicators. This later developed into concept design for managing innovation across the extended enterprise using semantic web technology for integrating heterogeneous information systems.
Ingersoll-Rand, Galway.
Ingersoll Rand (aka Thermo King) is a design and manufacturing company for temperature control equipment principally for the transportation industry. Since 1989, there have been five research projects on various aspects of operations management and innovation management. Projects have included development of a sheet metal flexible manufacturing system; integrated test management system; performance measurement system; innovation management system for the international IT department; creation of a shared services business model for transport equipment. Thermo King funded a number of activities that extended my iTeams concept from performance measurement into corrective actions, idea generation and project management. The IT department deployed the iTeams system in 2005.
Nortel Corporation, Galway.
Nortel Corp played a key role in developing initial user requirements for my iTeams concept, methodology and knowledge portal. When coupled with literature research and problem solving this work lead to the initial specification for the enterprise information portal. Nortel was an early adopter of the iTeams system and thoroughly tested and validated iTeams over a three year period between 1995-1998.
Udaras Na Gaeltacta, Galway and Environs.
Three individual projects, two sponsored by the EC and one by Udaras and currently running, involved the upskilling of Irish SMEs in innovation management techniques. A small team of researchers and staff develop online tools and workshops on all aspects of innovation and innovation management. The SMEs are all in the Gaeltacht or Irish language speaking region of Ireland. Over fifty companies have been involved.
WestBic, Galway and Environs.
A number of small projects including one currently running involve the training of SMEs, entrepreneurs, and incubation companies in the western region of Ireland. Staff and researchers develop online tools and workshops on all aspects of innovation and innovation management.
