Marine Law & Ocean Policy Centre

NUI, Galway has built up a tradition of excellence in marine research which is a priority research area within the University. The Marine Law and Ocean Policy Centre is a cross-faculty initiative between participants from the Law School, the Martin Ryan Institute and Trinity College Dublin. The aim of the Centre is to promote the inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary study of the legal, political, economic and social aspects of the ocean, the coastal zone and maritime resources. In order to attain to attain these objectives the Centre facilitates education and research, both pure and applied, in:

• Law of the sea
• Law and policy of fisheries and aquaculture
• Ocean and coastal zone management
• Law of the marine environment and ecosystems
• Sustainable development and exploitation of marine resources.

The Centre has a close working relationship with the Marine Institute, several government Departments and state agencies, as well as with European and international institutions.

The Joint Submission to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf pursuant to Article 76, paragraph 8 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 in respect of the area of the Celtic Sea and the Bay of Biscay is now accessible.

On 25 May 2005, Ireland made a submission through the Secretary-General to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, pursuant to article 76, paragraph 8, of the Convention. It is noted that the Convention entered into force for Ireland on 21 July 1996. The full text of this submission is available here.
