In July 2006, the Marine Law and Ocean Policy Centre at the National University of Ireland, Galway, will co-host the 30th Virginia Law of the Sea Conference to mark the 10th Anniversary of Ireland’s ratification of the Law of the Sea Convention.
The 2006 Conference, which is sponsored by the Marine Institute in Ireland, the Law of the Sea Institute of Iceland and the Center of Oceans Law and Policy at the School of Law, University of Virginia, will review a range of contemporary issues in marine scientific research, new technology and the law of the sea.
The three host institutes have developed an interesting programme with carefully selected topics, speakers and panellists. This programme concerns a range of issues that need to be addressed by the international community including the ecosystem approach in fisheries management, ocean exploration, the role of science in international decision-making and ocean policy, marine science capacity building, international transfer of marine technology, the European maritime policy, science in dispute settlement, marine biological diversity, genetic resources, and strategic developments in the Law of the Sea.
The programme will be presented and moderated by the leaders in the relevant scientific and legal fields including participants from the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea, the United Nations, the World Bank, the United States State Department, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Iceland, the European Commission, the International Seabed Authority, NOAA and the IOC.
Ireland has a reputation for marine research and will welcome scientists, lawyers, diplomats, government officials, academics, students, as well as representatives from inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations to the 2006 Conference.
