On 23rd November 2021, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD, gave approval in principle for the incorporation of St. Angela’s College into the Institute of Technology Sligo, and subsequently to become one of nine campuses of the new Atlantic Technological University across the West and North West.

Atlantic TU was officially launched on 1st April 2022 and now both Sligo institutions continue to work together to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible and that no one will be at a disadvantage, most of all our students.

Current students of St. Angela’s College commenced their third level academic journey on a course accredited by NUI Galway and this will not change. The College will honour the qualification already undertaken so those currently attending St. Angela’s College will graduate with a NUI Galway qualification.  In addition, current students will have ongoing access to the James Hardiman Library at NUI Galway.

Once St. Angela’s College incorporates with Atlantic TU, all students will have access to the many excellent facilities and services on both Sligo campuses. Our College Management Team and staff are actively collaborating and streamlining current support services to ensure that the student experience will be greatly enhanced because of this incorporation.

Changes to our accreditation (from NUI Galway to Technological University) will only apply to students who join us from September 2022 which means that new students will register as Atlantic TU students for the duration of their studies, again having access to the facilities and services available at both Sligo campuses.

Many of the services and supports already offered by St. Angela’s College will be greatly enhanced with colleagues from ATU Sligo campus:
  • Student Support Services
  • Academic Writing Centre
  • Access Office
  • International Office
  • Pastoral Care Service
  • Student Counselling
  • Yeats Library
  • Student Medical and Health Services
  • Career Service
  • Enhanced Online Learning
  • Sports Facilities (inc. fully equipped gym, football pitches and running track)
With the addition of:

Students’ Unions on both campuses are already working together as they envisage stronger representation for all students going forward.

This really is a wonderful opportunity for our College community, Sligo Town and the region as a whole as it will attract students both nationally and internationally, developing a diverse-rich learning experience for all. Outside of Dublin, Atlantic TU will be the largest multi-campus university with over 20,000 students so to be a part of this exciting transition is something we value and welcome.

Watch this space for further developments with Atlantic TU, together making Sligo a University Town for all to enjoy.
